I have tried a few different readers now, and none of them really clicked.

Usenet could perhaps be enhanced if I could only find the one...

Thunderbird, Pan, Agent, Newsbin, Unison, Hogwasher, Usenapp.

Mail integration that you can not hide, no dark theme, stuck in the dial
up-era á la press enter/double click to retrieve messages, etc.

I have not bothered with the text-based clients.

Hm.

Usenapp.

They could rename it to something cool.

It costs money, but it is for macOS. :)

Okay, you are it!

the best freeware newsreaders are 40tude Dialog and MicroPlanet Gravity;
both are full-featured, user-friendly, and fairly easy to setup and use,
especially MicroPlanet Gravity which is also more up-to-date (2021-5-2):

The best newsreader app for Windows is Gravity. Thanks to the fact that its C++
source code was released by its original authors, MicroPlanet, it has been kept
alive on the Internet. (The MicroPlanet Gravity newsreader project lives here at
Sourceforge http://mpgravity.sourceforge.net/.) After a 10-year hiatus (it was
last updated in 2010), I (Steve) decided to pick it up and keep it current. So,
GRC now offers the only still-working version of Gravity. I am independently
maintaining the source and have published a signed executable and installer.

i've tested MicroPlanet Gravity in Windows 7 and 11, and it works great;
(40tude Dialog also works fine, but alas it is much older "abandonware")

I tried MicroPlanet Gravity on my Windows laptop that I use for programming,
however I could not post:

441 Invalid syntax encountered in From header field body (unexpected byte or
empty content line)

I checked and the "From"-field does have my information in it.

Also, the application does not seem to sort by date automatically, and I find
myself having to click on the "Date"-column a few times, and scroll, to have
it sorted the right way. :)

Probably a setting somewhere.

It probably does not support Unicode (or anything except ASCII) and is
having issues with letter 'ö' in 'Söderberg'.

IIRC Thunderbird supports a dark theme if the system theme is dark too.
Which OS and theme do you use?

But, but, it would make me feel dirty. Of course Macs can multiboot
with Boot Camp but then I might as well have a 'Doze machine. Ditto
with Linux. On occasion I've run VMs in macOS for both 'Doze and
several flavours of Linux, just for special purposes such as the rare
occasions when suitable Mac software isn't available (mostly ham radio
stuff to drive my RF dongle).

This isn't my first rodeo, y'know. My antipathy towards 'Doze stems
from my early experience of running all versions from Win 3.0 to NT 4.0
(and PC DOS before that) before I escaped the Evil Empire and went to
Mandrake, my first Linux. Mandrake was fine but then I discovered
mac OS X 10.3 (Panther) and I've never looked back since.

I reiterate: putting 'Doze apps on my nice shiny Mac would soil it.
Why would I want to do that? Macs and their peripherals in the macOS
environment "just work". It's a joy to be able to use my 'puter as the
helpful tool that it's supposed to be without having to get out the
metaphorical spanners and screwdrivers to whip it into shape.

Colour me fanboi, oh yes indeed. I'm a fanboi who is proudly content
to be just that.

Why on Earth would a Mac user want to run 'Doze progs?
I have several Windows programs installed on my Mac (via Wine or in a
virtual machine), mainly newsreaders. As a beta tester of a newsreader
for macOS, I often need to know how an article posted with it looks in
other news clients, like MesNews or 40Tude Dialog.

Granted, that is one of the very few valid usage cases; it will
leave your nice shiny Mac in need of a thorough wash though.
Did I mention that 'Doze makes my teeth itch? Well, it does.

Perhaps you should have.

For example in my newsreader (tin), I can page through unread articles
with only <tab> and <space>. My hand rests on the keyboard and my
pointing finger rests on <tab> and my thumb on <space>. No hand movement
needed, just pressing the keys under my resting fingers.

No need for <enter> or double-clicks. A "mouse"? What's *that*!? :-)
Post by Samuel Söderberg
Hm.
Usenapp.
They could rename it to something cool.
It costs money, but it is for macOS. :)
tin is free, but if you want, you can pay for my advice! :-)

Originally, MacCafé was aimed primarily at former MacSOUP users, hence
its old-fashioned interface. However, it now offers many features not
found in MacSOUP, some of which I've never seen in any other newsreader.

I had the opportunity to test the very first version of Usenapp, which
looked very promising. In my opinion, the main drawback of this
newsreader is that it's not free.

I do not know if the incentives are there, but it would be great if MacCafé
was installable with Homebrew!

As far as I know, Homebrew is intended for programs that cannot be
installed directly under macOS, which is not the case with MacCafé. So
what would be the point of this type of installation?

No, it is a package manager that contains everything that is not in the App

I would agree. It probably would make more sense to make MacCafé
available via App Store. Currently, if you search for "Usenet" in App
Store on OS X, you'll only get Hogwasher and NGroup (which is the
weirders newsreader I ever saw).
