Is there something better than News Rover?

Is it normal to get this upon download?...
<< Discarded attached file: (3,697,043 bytes) >>

Warning: Actual file size (3697043) does not match declared file size (0).
The file may be corrupt.

Sometimes it deletes the file and sometimes it just gives it a wierd name
without an extension. But when I manually add the correct extention, the
downloaded file works fine. I don't understand why News Rover does this.

Is there a better news reader that won't give me this problem?

Thanks,
Tim

It seems to give me the same problem as NR. For example, I downloaded an Mp3
from a 70's group and 40tude reports unknown file name. I save it with the
correct name, and it works fine.

What causes that?

The file may be corrupt.
The two messages have different causes. The first may be due to a filter you
set. Check your settings on message size, attachment types, etc.

The second is due to the yenc specification. For the most part you can
ignore it.

No, there is nothing better than News Rover.

I get the first one sometimes with the second and the file is gone.
Sometimes I get just the second message and the fiel is renamed as "-1".

Anyway, where is that checked and what would I look for? I can't find any
settings that seem relevant.

I would like to ignore it all, but NR either deletes the entire file or
names it "-1", which cannot be opened without saving first and monkeying
with the name. Either case stops me from getting the download. In the second
case, when I get it, but it comes with a warning and the file is renamed, I
can manually correct the file's name and it works. So... the file is there
and it works, but NR sees it as bad and wants to trash it. Surely there's a
way to fix this?

Do you have DroneAlarm installed on the PC?

* Note: there is nothing wrong with the yEnc spec, competent newsclients
have NO problem with yEnc content.

I have Zone Alarm. Is that what you are talking about?

Yes. Then that is most likely your problem, remove the maliceware
[permanently!] and you should be back in Usenet bliss in no time flat.

That was it. Thanks a bunch. After you alerted me to this, I checked out a
few sites online that discussed it also. They stated not to upgrade to 5.1,
which I did. Fortunately, I kept the version 5.0 install exe. Once I swapped
out the versions, NR works again like it should. I get all the downloads
just fine.

Thanks again.

In my experience you shouldn't have upgraded to 5.0 as well
by remaining stuck to 4.5.594.

I might switch to another firewall alltogether. With ZA 5.0, although yEnc
works right now, I still had to manually twiddle with putting in my DNS
server calls into the "trusted" zone. It didn't alert me to that, just
blocked it. That causes email and I'net connections to fail intermittenly.
Once I did that, things seem to be pretty sweet.

Still and all, I plan to try another firewall for my knowledge. I'm thinking
of Sygate.

There's a Freeware version on the website. Some feature are restricted,
but it gives you a good feel for the product.

Please make sure your not running Zone Alarm 5.0 it reaks havoc on any yENC
encoded attachments. It effects every reader that hasn't patched it. Which
is pretty much all of them.

I'm running ZA 5.1. Is that version bad also for yEnc?

Surely you jest?
Every version of it is a virus in some way.

Have you ever considered getting a firewall? Sygate, Kerio and Agnitum
(Outpost) all make very reputable product, and all offer free versions.

I don't think so. The version I use, 4.5.594, has been
working fine, till now.

Actually, yes.

I've had good luck with ZA for years with two recent exceptions. 1) my new
DSL choked with ZA until I discovered and then manually set permission to
the DHCP (or whatever it's called), and 2) this problem with Usenet
downloads, which is now fixed by switching to a pre-5.1 version.

Still, I've read of other problems where techs recommended Sygate and other
firewalls instead of ZA. I've been meaning to check it out. I'll do that
this week.

blowjob are very common in middle and high schools.
How would you know that?
Did you know that there are now ways to acquire information other than
firsthand experience?
The newest release supposedly has the yENC problem fixed, but since I don't
use the app I wouldn't really know.
