Discussion:
PC newsreader that keeps messages and has a good text search

I've been using Thunderbird since Google Groups shut down, but I mostly
enjoyed GG for the ability to quickly find messages by keywords. I set
TB to keep all messages, but it's search has been horrible and can't
find hardly anything. It also had a bug last week where it
re-downloaded all the messages and now everything older than a week just
comes up with an error.

One of the other I'm looking for is the ability to retain all messages
in a particular newsgroup.

Also built in spellcheck. I remember I tried a couple other newsreaders
like x-news which is supposed to have a way to set up spellcheck but I
couldn't get working.

I'm on PC, so running in Windows (10 right now) is a must.

I don't care at all about binaries as I'm using eternal-september. I
don't mind paying a little, and am considering Agent too.

Not a problem with Tbird. A problem with ES (the Usenet provider you
use) where a server went down, the articles database got rebuilt which
resulted in new article articles (which won't match those you previously
downloaded). See the eternal-september.support newsgroup for more info
from Ray.

Maybe you specified retention periods for folders or in account
settings.

Could be you are using a view that hides old or flagged messages.

If you want something different, there are extensions you can add for
spell checking, like:

https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/search/?q=spell

By the way, Thunderbird has its own newsgroup over at ---.

Sorry it didn't appear to post so I pulled it from my sent, edited it a
bit more and posted again.

Ah thanks for that. As I've set to retain all messages it should have
them locally and I should still be able to access them?

I have the retention set to all for the main usenet group I use on that
folder, I don't see anything in account settings for that.

Ah, this could be it. Says it uses the server's retention policies even
if you choose to retain messages locally longer, there's no option to
prevent that.

Another reason for a different newsreader.

That was more about different newsreaders, Thunderbird's spell check
works fine.

Thanks, really looking for a different newsreader at this point.

Sorry if it feels like I'm flaming you, the heat is directed at TB.
You've been very helpful :)

I think I found where the issue is with it retaining the messages. In
the properties of the ng, synchronization tab, select offline.

Perhaps that will fix the issue with searching too. I'll keep on with
TB for awhile, and see if that helps, at least until the messages from
E-S are reloaded.

Thanks again!

I think the articles have already been reloaded at ES, but with
different article numbers, so all NNTP clients will be out of sync to
what they previously downloaded.

"I had to reload articles from another server with different article
numbers. In this case, I can choose between using the source server's
numbers or letting my server generate new article numbers. Each
alternative will cause issues for the clients' newsrc files :-( "
